We offer the option of a lower fixed retainer free of charge. The fixed retainer is placed on the back of the lower front six teeth. It is glued to the back of each tooth. If you choose to have a fixed retainer placed, the clear plastic retainer still has to be worn. There are pros and cons to the fixed retainer, so we leave the option up to you. We schedule extra time to place a fixed retainer, so if you know your preference please let us know.
Pros of fixed retainers
- Good option if compliance with clear retainers is poor
- May be helpful if severe crowding or rotations were present initially
- Can be added or removed in the future if you change your mind
Cons of fixed retainers
- Difficult, if not impossible, to floss
- Will come loose or break at some point
- You may not realize it’s broken until a tooth moves
- Becomes a food and plaque trap
- Food restrictions will apply (no hard or sticky foods)
