Keeping a Healthy Smile
While wearing aligner trays, you will continue to brush and floss like normal. Extra effort is necessary around attachments and elastic buttons. Make sure to maintain regular six-month checkups with your family dentist throughout your orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist does not replace the dentist!
Brushing Your Teeth
It is important to make sure all plaque and food particles are removed from the teeth prior to putting the trays back in your mouth. If plaque collects between your teeth and the tray, it can cause decalcification (white spots) and damage to the tooth surface. Be sure to brush your teeth after every meal, snacks, and before you go to bed. When you brush, make sure to angle your toothbrush to clean around the attachments and buttons. If you are unable to brush after a meal, drink water and use your tongue to clean the tooth surface. Don’t suck on sugary mints or gum to give your mouth a minty taste; this will trap sugar between the teeth and the tray.
Brushing Your Trays
Plaque and food residue will collect on your tray, creating the appearance of a cloudy film. Using hand soap and a toothbrush, gently brush your trays to remove the film. Avoid using toothpaste to clean your trays; it will scratch the trays. You can also clean your trays with denture cleaner or retainer cleaner.
